Archives For Christmas

I’ve always enjoyed Robin Mark’s music and Jesus, All for Jesus has been a favorite. Several years ago I wrote some Christmas lyrics to be used with the tune and its become a staple of our Christmas carols. Every year I think about sharing it more broadly but usually get to busy to post. This year I’ve actually remembered 9 days ahead. So, it’s probably to close to be incorporated by anyone else but feel free to use it if you like! Excuse the raw video – it’s just to give you a basic idea of how I do it.

Jesus, All For Jesus / Christmas Words

Savior, born of Mary.
Came to give your life,
to save us from our sins.

Emmanuel,
You are Prince of Peace…
Living Word made flesh,
to die and rise again!

All Your people cry, Hosanna in the highest!
All Your people cry, Hosanna in the highest!

Wonderful!
You are Wonderful!
Living Word made flesh,
to die and rise again!

Savior,
Hope of every heart
Angels join to sing
of your royal birth.

Sing Noel!
Welcome Emmanuel!
Forever You will reign,
in heaven and on earth.

Mighty King of Kings! Hosanna the Highest!
Mighty King of Kings! Hosanna the Highest!

Sing Noel!
Welcome Emmanuel!
Forever You will reign in heaven and on earth.
Forever You will reign in heaven and on earth.

I continue to be so impressed by the folks who run ResoundWorship.org. Their commitment to writing theologically sound, Gospel centered and musically accessible songs for the church is a welcome breath of fresh air. The fact that they give away all their material for free (they will accept donations) makes them stand out head and shoulders in the music publishing arena.

I wanted to bring two songs to your attention that we use in our church during the Advent and Christmas season:

What Kind of Throne

Written by Joel Payne, the song celebrates the incarnation and our surrender to Christ with a nice 3/4 lilt that lends itself very nicely to some fiddle and mandolin.

Make note of the screenshot on the left. Resound offers an amazing selection of tools beginning with high quality mp3s both for listening and a backing tracks. That’s followed by your standard charts and, for this song, orchestration! The PMZip files enables the chord charts to be imported into the Power Music 4 software and printed in any key you like.

What kind of throne is a manger of hay,
no majesty shown there, no dignity claimed,
for one who deserves to be
crowned and enthroned on our praise?
What kind of king is so modestly born,
when glory unmeasured is humble and small?
This is the hope of the world and the true light of all.

So I’ll bow down to worship the humblest of kings
and I’ll bring him the best that I have;
I’ll say that I love him, and that I am his,
and I’ll give him the throne of my heart,
I’ll give him the throne of my heart.

What kind of Saviour makes weakness his strength,
in frailty depending on those he would save,
and veiling the power
that always belonged to his name?
What kind of child causes heaven to sing,
with angels proclaiming the hope that he brings?
This is the glory of God, this is Jesus, the King.

On Christmas Day

Written by Matt Osgood, this song contains some wonderful images that capture the mystery of God incarnate. I particularly love the lyric: ” The hands that once split night from day now feebly clutch a blade of hay, this is Immanuel. Majestic king, now small and weak, the Word of God must learn to speak…” It’s a very uplifting song that does a great job of bringing together the twin tasks of teaching and worship in song. This song also includes a full orchestra score as well!

On Christmas day, a humble girl
gives birth to hope for all the world,
this is Immanuel.
How awesome and mysterious,
the Lord of heaven draws near to us,
this is Immanuel.

2. The hands that once split night from day
now feebly clutch a blade of hay,
this is Immanuel.
Majestic king, now small and weak,
the Word of God must learn to speak,
this is Immanuel.

This is our God, seen by our eyes,
the love of the Father made known in Jesus Christ.
This is our God, worthy of praise,
the love of the Father revealed on Christmas day.

3. The shepherds come and bow to him,
the Lamb who takes away our sin,
this is Immanuel.
For God has entered time and space
to show the world his endless grace,
this is Immanuel.

Immanuel, Immanuel. Our God is with us now.
Immanuel, Immanuel. Our God is with us now.
